Benefits for young people

Job seekers allowance: benefit available for people who are unemployed but capable of working. An unemployed person aged 16 -17 (not in full time education) may be able to in some circumstances to claim this benefit. Income support; benefit available for young people aged 16 -17 to help them pay for their day- to day leaving cost. Entitled for students in full time education or living with their parents.

Housing benefit; benefit for people on a low income to help them with their rent. If you fit the following criteria you will not be entitled to housing benefits;
• You have savings of over £16,000, unless you are getting the ‘guarantee credit’ of Pension Credit
• You live in the home of a close relative
• You’re a full-time student (unless you’re disabled or have children)
• You an asylum seeker or are sponsored to be in the UK

For a young person whose mother’s sectioned under mental health act or whose unable to live with father due to court order can be entitled to crisis loans, however if you fit the following criteria;
• Are aged 16 or over
• don’t have enough money to meet your (or your family’s) immediate short term needs in an emergency or as the result of a disaster
• think there will be serious damage or risk to your (or your family’s) health or safety without the loan

A crisis laon can also help with:
• you have suffered a disaster like a fire or flood that has caused a lot of damage and you need help to meet other expenses like replacing household items and clothing
• you have been awarded a Community Care Grant and you’re moving out of institutional or residential accommodation and don’t have enough money to pay advance rent to a non-local authority landlord
